So, the Mobile Residence Card! How is this I have here?

모바일 외국인등록증! 제가 가진 이 등록증과는 뭐가 다른 거죠?

Starting January 10th, the Ministry of Justice began issuing the mobile residence card to foreign residents with physical residence cards.

Simply put, you can now carry your residence card on your smartphone instead of carrying a physical one.

법무부는 올해 1월 10일부터 국내 체류 등록외국인을 대상으로 모바일 외국인등록증을 발급을 시작했는데요

쉽게 말해, 스마트폰 속에 외국인등록증을 보관하고 다닐 수 있게 된 것이죠!

You can easily get your mobile residence card by downloading the mobile identification app on a smartphone registered under your name.

모바일 신분증 앱을 본인 명의 스마트폰에 설치하면 간편하게 발급받을 수가 있어요

To get a mobile residence card instantly, you need the new version of the physical residence card.

모바일 외국인등록증을 당장 발급받으려면 신형 외국인등록증이 필요해요

A new version? Is it different from the one I have here?

신형 외국인등록증은 뭔가요? 제가 가진 이 등록증과 또 다른 건가요?

Yes! To make it easier to issue a mobile residence card, we started rolling out a new version of the residence card in January.

네! 모바일 외국인등록증을 손쉽게 발급받을 수 있도록, 올해 1월부터 신형 외국인등록증을 발급하고 있어요.

A new version of the residence card... and the mobile residence card... I am still confused.

신형 외국인등록증, 모바일 외국인등록증 아직 헷갈리는데요

This is the old version and here’s the new one. Unlike the old one, this newly introduced physical residence card comes with an e_m_b_e_dded IC chip.

I know you can’t see the chip on its surface.

Can you tell the diffrence between the old one and the new one?

Yes, the mark on its left side. This mark indicates that the card contains an IC chip.

신형 외국인등록증은 실물 외국인등록증으로 기존 외국인등록증과 달리 전자칩(IC)이 내장되어 있어요.

전자칩 내장 여부는 외국인등록증 좌측 상단의 모바일 신분증 로고로 확인할 수 있어요.

What exactly is an IC chip?

전자칩(IC)이란 무엇인가요?

This IC chip stores your Personal Identification Number.

By scanning your residence card with an IC chip using mobile ID app, you can easily issue your mobile residence card.

전자칩에는 외국인등록증 소지자의 개인식별번호(PIN)가 저장되어 있어요.

전자칩이 내장된 외국인등록증을 모바일 신분증 앱에 인식하면 손쉽게 모바일등록증을 발급받을 수 있죠

Then what about those who only have the old version without an IC chip?

Can they still get a Mobile Residence Card?

그럼 전자칩(IC)이 없는 기존 외국인등록증을 가지고 있는 사람은 모바일등록증을 발급받을 수 없나요?

Of course! they can still apply. The process is just a little different though.

아니요! 기존 외국인등록증 소지자도 발급받을 수 있어요 단, 발급 절차가 좀 다를 뿐이죠

Since identity verification is required, they need to visit an immigration office that is most convenient for them, scan a QR code with their smartphone and complete the verification process.

신원확인이 필요하기 때문에 가까운 출입국외국인관서를 방문해 스마트폰으로 신원확인 QR 코드를 스캔한 후 본인인증을 받아야 모바일 등록증을 발급받을 수 있습니다.

So, any registered foreigner can apply for a Mobile Residence Card?

The mobile residence card is only available to registered foreign nationals aged 14 and older who are residing in Korea.

등록된 외국인이라면 누구나 모바일 외국인등록증을 발급받을 수 있나요?

모바일 외국인등록증은 한국에 체류 중인 14세 이상 등록외국인이라면 발급 받을 수 있어요

I actually have two smartphones.

That would be cool to have my mobile residence card on both devices.

This would make things so convenient.

저는 스마트폰이 두 대가 있는데요 두 대 모두 다운로드해서 사용하면 더 편리할 것 같아요

I have to point this out. This mobile residence card can only be issued on a single smartphone registered under your name.

아쉽지만, 모바일 외국인등록증은 본의 명의 스마트폰 1대에서만 발급이 가능해요

I see. Anyway, I can leave my physical residence card at home, right?

이제 실물 외국인등록증은 집에 두고 다녀도 되는 거네요?

Absolutely! the mobile residence card holds the same legal validity as the physical card.

It also utilizes advanced security technologies, making it safe to use in government offices, banks, convenience stores, hospitals and more.

그럼요. 모바일 외국인등록증은 실물 신분증과 동일한 효력을 가지고 있어요

또한 모바일 외국인등록증은 첨단 보안기술이 적용되어 높은 수준의 보안성 갖추고 있어 공공기관, 금융기관, 편의점, 병원 등에서 다양하게 활용할 수 있답니다.

Awesome! All I need is my smartphone.

That sounds super convenient! But what if I lose my smartphone?

Won’t my personal information be at risk?

스마트폰 하나만 있으면 되니 정말 편리할 것 같은데요 혹시... 스마트폰을 분실해서 개인정보가 유출되거나 도용될까 걱정도 되네요

No worries! Once you report your smartphone as lost on the mobile ID website, the app will automatically lock to prevent any unauthorized use or data leakage.

걱정하지 않으셔도 돼요! 스마트폰을 분실했을 경우 모바일 신분증 홈페이지에 분실신고를 하면 자동으로 잠김처리가 되어 개인정보 도용이나 유출을 방지할 수 있답니다.

What if I change my smartphone or accidentally delete the Mobile ID app?

스마트폰을 변경하거나 모바일 외국인등록증 앱이 삭제된 경우에는 어떻게 해야 하나요?

If you have the new IC chip-e_m_b_e_dded physical residence card, you can simply download the app again and reissue the mobile residence card.

전자칩이 내장된 외국인등록증을 소지한 경우, 앱을 다시 다운로드 받아 쉽게 재발급할 수 있어요

If you still have the old version, you will need to visit an immigration office again to scan the QR code for verification.

하지만 기존 외국인등록증 소지자는 출입국외국인관서를 방문하여 다시 큐알 코드를 촬영해야 해요

That means getting the new IC chip-e_m_b_e_dded registration card saves you from having to visit the immigration office!

전자칩이 내장된 신형 외국인등록증을 발급받으면, 출입국·외국인관서를 방문할 필요가 없으니 훨씬 편리하겠네요!

Exactly! All new residence cards issued since January include an IC chip.

One thing to keep in mind, though—the issuance fee has increased by 5,000 won, bringing the total to 35,000 won.

다만, 발급 수수료가 5천원이 인상되어 총 3만 5천원을 납부해야 하는 것도 기억해주세요
