Hello, I’m Carlos Gorito, a member of the Immigrant Mentor Group. The Smart Entry System (SES), the automated immigration gates, is now globally recognized! However, many people misunderstand that it is only available to Korean nationals. But that's not the case. In fact, foreign nationals can use the SES too in some cases. Today, we will explain when foreigners can use the system through a fun skit.

Yes, I’ve been living in Korea since I got a job here, but it’s really inconvenient to use the immigration lane for foreign nationals every time I get back from my business trip. 

I actually came to travel in Korea, and I’d like to know if I can use the SES. 

Wait! No worries. Foreign nationals aged 17 and older who are registered or have reported domestic residence can use it upon arrival and departure without prior registration.

No way. I’ve only used the immigration lane for foreign nationals until now! 

At the manned immigration counter, the officers collected fingerprint information and took a photo with a camera.

If foreign visitors provide their facial image and fingerprints upon arrival, they can also use the SES when departing. 

I don’t need to queue then.

자동 심사대 등록하러 왔어요?

네, 저는 한국에 취업해서 지금까지 한국에 살고 있는데 출장 갈 때마다 외국인 심사대 이용하는 거 너무 불편해요.

저도 사실 여행하러 왔는데 자동 심사대 이용할 수 있는지 물어보려고요

잠깐! 걱정할 필요가 없어요. 외국인등록 또는 거소신고한 17세 이상 외국인이면 사전 등록 없이 자동 심사대를 이용해서 출국 및 입국할 수 있습니다.

저는 여태까지 그거 모르고 계속 외국인심사대만 이용한 거예요?

유인 심사대에서 심사관이 카메라로 얼굴을 찍고 지문도 수집했거든요.

여행을 온 외국인도 이렇게 입국할 때 얼굴과 지문 정보를 제공했다면 출국할 때도 자동 심사대를 이용할 수 있습니다.

그러면 여기서 줄 설 필요 없겠네요.

출국할 때에는 걱정없이 보다 빠른 자동심사대를 이용해보세요

Tips for Immigration 

▶ Foreigners aged 17 and older who are registered or have reported domestic residence are eligible to use the Smart Entry Service (SES) without prior registration (Prior registration is required for those aged 7 and under 17.)

▶ Tourists aged 17 and above are eligible to use the SES at departure if they provide information on fingerprints and facial image during entry inspection.
